Genre research: A wrinkle in time

What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?

The genre we have chosen for our final task is coming of age. In this film A girl and brother dealing with their regular lives stumble upon their fathers work which deal with interplanetary travel.. Throughout this film they use mis-en-scene to show the teenagers and their struggles with their new found responsibilities as they are fated with saving. One the main characters Meg is dealing with the disappearance of her father. They use acting to portray the character as she struggles with regular problems as she grows from the situation happening. Her newfound Responsibility is used to deal with the conventional issues of teens in these films. The relationships between characters portrayed was very showing of a coming of age film and allowed the watcher to connect with the characters. The friendships and turmoil represented show the ups and downs of adolescence in convention with coming of age films. Time again her bonds with people are tested as she deals with her new found powers. In Our film we plan to make use of the developing relationships that are present in coming of age films. We will use the way they acted to show the standing of our characters and how the situation molds them.

What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like?
The use of props and acting as a means to represent each character and who they were. Each of the main characters is depicted as a part of their own worlds. Meg is depicted as an average high school student dealing with the loss of her father. The other two are her little brother and her friend from school. Even the characters introduced as guides are draped in colorful dream-like clothing to add to the mystifying nature of the film. Throughout the film we can see that the different dynamics each character had prior to them gaining the responsibility and how it effected them throughout the experience. As Meg dealt with turmoil she tried more than ever to hold on and continue the fight against evil. The acting used and the props used show the way in which each character developed during the film. Coming of age shows the character development of the characters and this film seemed to do that really well. Along with the acting the music used in the movie added a lot to the atmosphere and gives the watcher an even better understanding of the importance of a scene. Music gives scenes a lot in the ambiance and creates shifts in tone that change the movies direction and the use of music in this film does just that.

What elements of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?
While I enjoyed the realistic relationships and development of the characters the gloominess of some of the backstories weren’t very appealing to me. While, they were executed well those types of gloomy backstories aren’t the thing that I like about the characters. This convention to have characters with disheartening backgrounds tends to be what I don’t like in coming of age films. The realism in the situations people have been brought up in add to the film but also make the movie sad at times which isn’t something I look forward to or enjoy.
